Aespa’s Winter Covers Gay Song With NSFW Lyrics, Sparks Heated Debate

The song features lyrics like “I’m in love with your fingertips” and “Touch me, feel me.”

Aespa’s Winter set off a fiery debate between fans this week after sharing a cover of Victoria Monét’s “Touch Me” — a song which features explicit lyrics about sexual intimacy between two women.

Naturally, fans were mesmerized by Winter’s beautiful vocals in the clip, which has already amassed more than half a million likes on Instagram. However, they were also quick to pick up on the lyrics Winter sang, including lines like “I’m in love with your fingertips” and “Girl, it’s been too long.”

Victoria Monét previously made the song’s intent clear in an Apple Music commentary, emphasizing its importance as a rare example of unabashedly expressed queer desire. “It was really important for me to share that… especially in a sexual way,” Monét said, noting the lack of such direct representation in mainstream music.

“Touch Me” is one of the only songs where you can hear me sing a different pronoun. I say “girl,” I say “her.” I think it’s important for music to have that. A lot of times we can make songs applicable to us, but they’re not directly being like, “This is about a woman.”

While numerous fans were excited to hear Winter cover a song that boldly celebrates lesbian and sapphic relationships…

… some questioned whether she really grasped the song’s context and suggested it was unlikely Winter’s song choice had anything to do with the lyrics.

The claims soon led to fierce backlash among MYs. Although Winter stated that her “English is terrible” at a recent aespa concert, fans have always been impressed by the star’s language skills despite her lack of confidence, with Giselle praising Winter’s English accent as the best in the group.

As such, some say that claims Winter can’t understand the song she’s singing are racially charged, arguing that fans often unfairly underestimate idols’ awareness of LGBTQ+ content.

On top of that, fans also resurfaced remarks Winter previously made on the artist-fan chat app Bubble, where she explained that she checks to make sure lyrics are appropriate before recommending songs to fans.

Many are comparing the situation a similar debate Karina sparked last year when she shared the song “Lunch” by Billie Eilish in an Instagram post — in which Eilish also sings about sex between two women. Earlier this week, both Karina and Winter went viral for an unexpected on-stage “boob grab” moment.
