It must be said it’s been a somewhat weaker year for Netflix on the romantic comedy front. La Dolce Villa may have done it for some people, but it certainly didn’t light the world on fire, and beyond that, it’s been very quiet. Hoping to get the genre back on track at the streamer is The Wrong Paris, which will bring back Miranda Cosgrove from her first appearance in a Netflix rom-com last year in Mother in the Bridge to star alongside Pierson Fodé.
The plot centers on a woman who joins a dating show, thinking it’s in Paris, France, but it’s actually in Paris, Texas. While her initial plan is to get out of there as soon as possible, one of the contestants throws a wrench into the plan.

Tyler Perry has had a very busy year on Netflix, and his big slate continues in September. Although he won’t be contributing to this particular movie in a writing or directing capacity, he will be producing it alongside DeVon Franklin as part of a big push into faith-based programming.
Written by Michael Elliot and Cory Tynan, the film provides a modern spin on the classic biblical story with the feature film following rising Atlanta hip-hop artist Ruth Moably as she leaves behind the glamorous life to care for her late boyfriend’s mother in rural Tennessee, where she finds healing and unexpected romance
New Movies Coming in October 2025
Steve

Director: Tim Mielants
Cast: Cillian Murphy, Tracey Ullman, Jay Lycurgo, Simbi Ajikawo, and Emily Watson
Runtime: 1hr 33m
Picture: Netflix
Cillian Murphy leads this new drama, based on the novel by Max Porter, and stands out as one of the few Netflix UK film projects releasing this year. The story centers on a troubled headteacher, portrayed by Murphy, who is grappling with deep personal struggles while also facing the collapse of his professional life. With the school he oversees teetering on the brink of closure, the film explores whether redemption is possible on either front.
We’ve more information on Steve in our comprehensive guide to the new movie, available here.
Nouvelle Vague
Coming to Netflix: October 10th (US Only)
Director: Richard Linklater
Cast: Zoey Deutch, Alix Bénézech, Guillaume Marbeck, Iliana Zabeth, and Paolo Luka-Noé
Picture: Goodfellas
Netflix is heading to France for one of its most stylish international dramas of the year with Nouvelle Vague, which it acquired after its debut at the Cannes Film Festival. This movie aims to capture the rebellious spirit of 1960s French cinema. Set in the heart of Paris, the show follows a group of aspiring filmmakers and actors as they navigate love, politics, and artistic ambition during a time of cultural upheaval. With a mix of real-life icons and fictional characters, the series blends fact and fiction to tell a story about youth, revolution, and the power of storytelling. This feels incredibly niche but prestigious. Netflix also doesn’t have an entirely good track record with black-and-white dramas, but perhaps this one will be the exception.
A House of Dynamite
Coming to Netflix: October 24th
Cast: Idris Elba, Rebecca Ferguson, Gabriel Basso, Jared Harris, Tracy Letts, Anthony Ramos, Moses Ingram, Jonah Hauer-King, with Greta Lee and Jason Clarke
Title for A House of Dynamite Netflix
Kathryn Bigelow’s new thriller for Netflix is one of the most tightly guarded projects in recent memory. Known for The Hurt Locker and Zero Dark Thirty, Bigelow is reuniting with familiar producing partners to deliver what’s shaping up to be a major tentpole for the streamer. Details remain scarce, but the cast assembled is one of the most impressive for any Netflix film to date.
As for the plot, the only official synopsis released so far reads: “When a single, unattributed missile is launched at the United States, a race begins to determine who is responsible and how to respond.”
With its minimalist premise and Bigelow’s reputation for high-stakes, grounded thrillers, expectations are sky-high for this one.
She Walks In Darkness
Coming to Netflix: October 17th (select theaters from October 3rd)
Director: Agustín Díaz Yanes
Cast: Susana Abaitua, Andrés Gertrúdix, Iraia Elias, Raúl Arévalo and Ariadna Gil
Picture: Netflix Spain
Society of the Snow’s J.A. Bayona is producing this new thriller, which depicts the lives of multiple members of the Spanish Civil Guard who were directly involved in fighting and rooting out terrorism in the 1990s and early 2000s. Based on actual events, this film follows Amaia, a young civil guard who spends more than a decade working as an undercover agent within ETA to locate the group’s hideouts in the South of France.

For many, including myself, Frankenstein will undoubtedly top the list of most anticipated new movies thanks to not only a stellar cast but also the talent behind the camera in the form of Guillermo del Toro, who netted Netflix an Oscar with his last film, Pinocchio. Can he continue the streak with his long-dreamed-about horror sci-fi movie Frankenstein? From early footage, things look good.
Bringing to life the classic Mary Shelley novel Frankenstein, or The Modern Prometheus, we see an award-winning roster bring the story of Frankenstein to life in a new gothic horror style, filled to the brim with style and acting prowess.
In Your Dreams

From Pixar alums, this new animated movie has significant backing from Netflix, making it an Oscar hopeful for the streamer. It shares many of the same DNA elements as the movie Over the Moon from several years ago, although it appears to be executed on a whole new level. The adventure movie follows siblings Stevie and Elliot, who can travel into their dreams, resulting in a variety of quirky locations and an assortment of characters to interact with.
Train Dreams
Coming to Netflix: November 21st

One of the Sundance pickups from this year that wasn’t a documentary is Train Dreams, the wonderfully reviewed period drama set at the turn of the 20th Century with big changes happening across society. You’ll follow Robert Grainier, a logger and railroad worker who is struggling to navigate this changing world. The movie received excellent reviews upon its release, earning an impressive 97% score on Rotten Tomatoes as of now. Alex Billington for FirstShowing wrote, “Edgerton is phenomenal in this – understated and down-to-earth. A fine example of how a performance doesn’t need to be showy or over-the-top to be significant & moving.”
New Movies Coming in December 2025
Troll 2
Coming to Netflix: December 1st
Director: Roar Uthaug
Cast: Ine Marie Wilmann, Kim Falck, Mads Sjøgård Pettersen, Sara Korami, Ágota Dunai, and Karoline Viktoria Sletteng Garvang
Runtime: 1 hour 40 mins
Troll still holds the accolade of being the most-watched non-English movie of all time. That’s quite an accolade and one that granted it a full-on sequel, which will debut on December 1st. Roar Uthaug returns to the director’s chair from the first movie, as do many of the cast members from the original, alongside a few new faces. “Nora, Andreas, and Captain Kris leap back into action when a dangerous new troll awakens – and this time, they’ll need more help to take it down,” reads the official synopsis.
Jay Kelly
Coming to Netflix: December 5th
Cast: George Clooney, Adam Sandler, Laura Dern, Billy Crudup, Grace Edwards, Stacy Keach, Riley Keough, Emily Mortimer, Patrick Wilson, Nicôle Lecky, Thaddea Graham, Jim Broadbent, Eve Hewson, Alba Rohrwacher, Lenny Henry, Josh Hamilton, and Greta Gerwig
Picture: Netflix
One of the movies on this list with very limited information available is Jay Kelly, a film that still only has the official synopsis: “A heartbreaking comedy from Noah Baumbach starring George Clooney, Adam Sandler, and Laura Dern.” Very ominous. We do know it had an extensive filming schedule with shoots across the globe and, once again, features a stacked cast. More to come on this when we get it!
Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery
Coming to Netflix: December 12th
Director: Rian Johnson
Cast: Daniel Craig, Josh O’Connor, Glenn Close, Josh Brolin, Mila Kunis, Jeremy Renner, Kerry Washington, Andrew Scott, Cailee Spaeny, Daryl McCormack, Thomas Haden Church
Runtime: 2hr 24m
Picture: Netflix
Although much of the conversation around Knives Out’s move to Netflix still focuses on its limited theatrical releases, anticipation remains high for the third installment in Rian Johnson’s whodunnit series. Daniel Craig returns as Benoit Blanc, once again diving into a fresh mystery with a brand-new cast of characters, each one a possible suspect. Billed as Blanc’s most dangerous case yet, the upcoming movie looks to raise the stakes even higher, continuing Netflix’s investment in one of its biggest film franchises.
New Movies Coming in Fall 2025 – Date TBD
Ballad of a Small Player
Director: Edward Berger
Cast: Colin Farrell, Fala Chen, Deanie Ip, Alex Jennings and Tilda Swinton

Edward Berger made his Netflix debut with the Oscar-winning film All Quiet on the Western Front, and it is arguably one of Netflix’s best films they’ve ever made. No pressure on his follow-up Ballad of a Small Player then, eh?
French Lover
Director: Nina Rives
Cast: Omar Sy, Sara Giraudeau, Pascale Arbillot, and Alban Ivanov
Runtime: 2 hours 2 mins
Picture: Netflix
Omar Sy has been a fixture on Netflix since his breakout role in the French series Lupin and will be featured on our screens plenty more times in the future, with not only the return of Season 4 but also in a new Extraction series. Coming up first, however, is a new romantic comedy where Sy will share the spotlight with Sara Giraudeau. He plays Abel Camara, a very much in-demand celebrity who falls in love with someone he’d never have expected to connect with.
Night Always Comes
Director: Benjamin Caron
Cast: Vanessa Kirby, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Zack Gottsagen, Stephan James, Randall Park, Julia Fox, Michael Kelly, Eli Roth, Jake McDorman

This under-the-radar R-rated crime thriller could end up being one of Netflix’s sleeper hits, with Vanessa Kirby leading the charge. Filmed in Portland, Oregon during the summer of 2024, the movie adapts Willy Vlautin’s novel The Night Always Comes. Set throughout a single night, it follows Lynette, a determined woman risking everything to secure a home and a better future for her family, facing danger, setbacks, and hard truths along the way.
The Twits
Director: Phil Johnston
Cast: Margo Martindale, Johnny Vegas, with Natalie Portman and Emilia Clarke
Runtime: 1hr 38m
Picture: Netflix
Coming from the now-defunct studio Jellyfish Pictures, this is one of the largest projects we’ve seen released since Netflix acquired the Roald Dahl Library a few years ago. Coming from Zootopia and Wreck-It Ralph director Phil Johnston, his new animated film looks to have a lot of heart and hate as it brings to life Mr. and Mrs. Twit, played by Johnny Vegas and Margo Martindale.
The new animated feature follows the world’s nastiest couple, Mr. and Mrs. Twit, as they rise to power with their grotesque amusement park, Twitlandia. When the town falls under their rule, two clever orphans and a group of magical animals must band together to stop them.
The Woman in Cabin 10
Director: Simon Stone

Also joining Steve from the Netflix UK lineup is The Woman in Cabin 10, which stars Kiera Knightley, who made her big debut on Netflix in 2024 with Black Doves (and will soon be filming season 2). She’ll be back in this new thriller, which adapts the novel of the same name by Ruth Ware, with the plot focusing on a travel writer who stumbles upon a gruesome secret while traveling aboard a luxury cruise ship.
New Christmas Movies Coming to Netflix in 2025
We’ll have an expanded preview of Netflix’s Christmas slate coming soon, but until then, here’s a recap of all the confirmed Christmas movies on Netflix for 2025. For the most part, Netflix releases its entire Xmas slate in the weeks leading up to Thanksgiving in the United States (that’s November for everyone!). However, there are always a few exceptions that drop in the early days of December.
- My Secret Santa – Mike Rohl is directing this rom-com starring Alexandra Breckenridge and Ryan Eggold.
- A Merry Little Ex-Mas – Steve Carr is directing this rom-com starring Alicia Silverstone and Oliver Hudson.
That’s your Fall 2025 movie slate on Netflix – what are you most looking forward to? Looking even further ahead, movies like People We Meet on Vacation and The Rip are already scheduled for the first month of 2026, with LOTS more to look forward to throughout the year.
