Shocking Age Gap Between Contestants On Korea’s First Lesbian Dating Show Sparks Outrage

The youngest contestant’s age has sparked controversy.

South Korea’s first lesbian dating show is making waves among Korean netizens for more reasons than one. While many are excited to see how ToGetHer unfolds, the age gap between the youngest and oldest participants has sparked massive controversy.

ToGetHer, which premiered on Wavve this week, features seven contestants who are all drawing major attention for their stunning looks: Mirang, Dagyo, Jinah, Seoyeon, Riwon, Heeyoung, and Hangyul.

With only two episodes aired so far, not much is known about the participants, but Korean viewers have been digging into their backgrounds to learn more, including about the women’s ages.

While several of the participants appear to be in their 30s, the age of one contestant has shocked many: singer-songwriter Hangyul, the youngest of the seven, was reportedly born in 2006.

This would make her just 18 or 19 years old, depending on her birthday. As eagle-eyed netizens believe she recently graduated from her high school’s creative writing department, she’s likely to be 19 already.

The revelation of Hangyul’s age has drawn mixed reactions across social media. On Korean community site TheQoo, netizens mostly expressed shock at learning just how young she is.

  • Oh gosh, such a baby.
  • They really brought in a baby if she’s ’06-born ㅋㅋㅋㅋ
  • Can anyone even handle someone born in 2006?
  • She’s totally my type, but she’s just a baby. After learning her age and rewatching the clips, she really does come off super young ㅋㅋ
  • A baby showed up.
  • She’s a baby, isn’t she?
  • The age gap between her and the other contestants is huge.

International viewers on X (formerly known as Twitter) also had similar reactions.

Korean X (formerly Twitter) users, meanwhile, have been far more scathing, calling the producers “desperate” for recruiting a recent high school graduate.

Is it for real that Hangyul was born in ’06? They must’ve really been short on people.

No but WTF, sticking a ’06 into this lineup… Is the PD a psychopath? LMAO

What’s more is that Heeyoung, a tattoo artist and presumed eldest contestant, was reportedly born in 1993, potentially making her 32 years old.

Given that the dating field is open between all participants, the huge 13-year age gap between Hangyul and Heeyoung has raised eyebrows with many. One viewer questioned whether it was appropriate at all for the two to be on a dating show together.

Apparently there’s a ’93-born tattoo artist too. Is it even okay for a ’93 and a ’06 to be together on the same dating show??? That’s insane. Seriously, were they really that short on people, that they stuck an ’06 between all the ’93s?

Others, however, are less fazed, with some pointing out that Hangyul is technically a legal adult despite being young.

Yeah, but the ’06 could probably still date a ’93 though.

As ToGetHer unfolds, it remains to be seen whether a romance will be sparked between Hangyul and the older women on the show.
